Childrens

According to UNICEF in Ecuador, the calculated figure is 3.1 million children and adolescents at risk of multidimensional poverty, that is, they will suffer multiple disadvantages at the same time Of these, six out of 10 will live in a situation of extreme poverty multidimensional. 715,000 households will live in multidimensional poverty. And in households with children, the increase in this type of poverty will be from 43.0% to 48.5%. The reasons are: The reduction of employment. The drastic decrease in household income. The increase in child labour. Leaving the educational system. Due to Covid-19, it is expected that, in addition to the decrease in household income, inequality will increase, that is, the distance between rich and poor will be greater. There will be 1.8 million more people in income poverty and the middle class will shrink by around 1.1 million people. Unicef estimates that an investment of 2.4% of Ecuador's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or the equivalent of USD 2,599 million, is necessary to mitigate the effect of the health crisis. The key will be to allocate the money to the activation of the social protection system.

Youth

According to CELAC at present, adolescents and young people from the popular, urban and rural strata, in particular, suffer an unprecedented risk of social exclusion, derived from a confluence of determinations that —from the market, the State and society—tend to concentrate poverty among them and distance them from the “central course” of the social system. Among those factors are: The difficulties faced by the State in reforming education and training systems at a pace adjusted to the speed of change in the requirements of new aptitudes and skills; The transformations of the family, which contribute to the poverty of the new generations, especially in the case of popular households, since problems arising from incomplete and unstable families are more frequent among the lower-income strata, which have an intense and negative impact on the socialization of their children. A "demographic" effect, associated with the early emancipation of young people with relatively low educational levels, which results in higher fertility rates than those of their peers with higher educational levels, and contributes to concentrating poverty in the first stages of the cycle of family life.
